  • areas of pronunciation that learners need to study, such as individual sounds, word stress and intonation in sentences
  • the 4 language skills; speaking, listening, reading and writing with practical ideas for activities to practise these skills
  • teaching different types of learners, different levels and different types of class
  • future career options and how to apply for TEFL jobs

Teaching Practice

Teaching practice happens in small groups of usually 3-5 trainees. You’ll each get at least 6 hours of assessed teaching practice in total, broken up into 9 or 10 lessons. You'll also get the opportunity to teach a 1-to-1 private lesson and also at least one lesson unassessed, allowing you to enjoy yourselves with the learners. As part of the course, you’ll also observe some of your co-trainees’ lessons, enabling you to see a range of different styles of teaching. You’ll teach a class of real English learners who since they get their lessons for free, are always happy to participate, which takes the pressure off you while you’re learning!

Feedback to Teaching Practice

All your lessons are followed by feedback sessions, which are led by an experienced trainer.  Self-evaluation is an important part of this feedback. We all make mistakes at this initial stage, and your ability to identify them and to learn from them will be monitored and appraised during your progress on the course. You’ll be able to feedback to your co-trainees on their teaching, and the tutor will provide both spoken and written feedback, making the requirements as transparent as possible.

Preparing for Teaching

Time to prepare for teaching is structured into the timetable (1 hour a day), and a course tutor will be present for the first 3 of the 4 weeks. You’ll have access to all our facilities for this: school textbooks and resource books, photocopier, computer, printer, internet, etc. The course tutor will help you with ideas and suggestions, and you can bounce ideas off her/him if you need to.

Guided Observation of Experienced Teachers

You’ll get the chance to observe the lessons of Rose of York teachers teaching students from all over the world. This is a great opportunity to see how the theory you’re learning comes together in practice, and we’ll supplement this with video observations of previously recorded lessons.

Assignments and Journals

The course includes several assignments and journals. You’ll receive detailed guidance on how to do them, see examples by other trainees, and your input sessions will be organised to ensure that you learn everything you need before beginning each one. These are:

  • The Learner Profile – you’ll interview and prepare a lesson for an individual learner, writing about your learner’s language, needs, interests and the lesson in this assignment
  • The Materials Assignment – you’ll write about some of the materials you’ve prepared for your lessons and how you used them
  • The Unknown Language Journal - you'll write about your experiences learning a new language
  • The Guided Observation Journal - you'll write about the lessons you observed by Rose of York teachers
